Two for the Road is a series in which two artists touring together chat about playing shows, life backstage, and more. The latest installment of the series features English post-punk band Squid and alt-pop duo Water from Your Eyes, and you can get tickets to their upcoming shows here.

This weekend, Squid will kick off a North American tour in support of their recent studio album O Monolithand they’ve tapped CoSign alums Water from Your Eyes as their opening act. Ahead of those dates, we got Squid’s Ollie Judge and Louis Borlase together with Water from Your Eyes’ Rachel Brown and Nate Amos for a little pre-tour meet-and-greet.

“I think I first heard you guys on the way back from a hearing test,” Judge tells the Water from Your Eyes duo over video chat. “It all went well, then I blasted your album on the way home.”

After that drive, Judge went on to introduce Water from Your Eyes’ twisted noise-pop to Borlase, who recalled listening to their recent album Everyone’s Crushed on a long plane ride: “It was one of those ones where you keep falling asleep during the flight,” Borlase says. “And it kept waking me up.”

Amos admits that Everyone’s Crushed has a few musical “jump scares,” which puts them right in line with Squid’s self-described “anxiety rock.” During their conversation, the four musicians also discuss their differences in preparing for tour (with Water from Your Eyes touring with a drummer for the first time), their cigarette-smoking habits (or lack thereof, in Brown’s case), playing cards together, and more.
